First things first. What is an EGOT?

Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony. Only 19 entertainers have managed to win at least one of each. And as of the 2024 Emmy Awards, Elton John officially joined their ranks!

Elton earned the Outstanding Variety Special Emmy for Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium. The concert special hit Disney+ in late 2022.

Working through the alphabet, G stands for Grammy. And as a music artist, Elton has won more of these trophies than the other EGOT awards. But some patience and determination was required. He left his first NINE Grammy ceremonies empty handed. Here’s a list of his 6 wins out of 31 nominations:

  • 1987 – Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal – “That’s What Friends Are For” (Dionne Warwick & Friends)
  • 1992 – Best Instrumental Composition – “Basque”
  • 1995 – Best Male Pop Vocal Performance – “Can You Feel The Love Tonight”
  • 1998 – Best Male Pop Vocal Performance – “Candle In The Wind 1997”
  • 1999 – Grammy Legend Award
  • 2001 – Best Music Show Album – Elton John & Tim Rice’s Aida

Oscars, a.k.a. the Academy Awards come next, and Elton John won Best Original Song twice, 25 years apart.

  • 1994 – “Can You Feel The Love Tonight” from The Lion King
    • “Circle Of Life” and “Hakuna Matata” were also nominated, and Elton John composed both.
  • 2019 – “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” from Rocketman

And finally, his Tony Awards for excellence in stage musicals. He earned three nominations total, but took home a Best Original Score win in 2000 for Aida.

Earlier this year, Elton John completed his years-long Farewell Yellow Brick Road jaunt that served as his retirement from touring. And we got a hilarious story from one of Elton John’s rockstar friends out of it. He also owned the record for all-time highest grossing concert tour for a few months before Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour passed him.
